The ISO Latin-1 charcter set is the standard for the World Wide Web. Each character, number, or letter in the set is assigned a number. Some of these symbols are also assigned a name. By following a strict syntax, it is possible to create these symbols in HTML so that they appear correctly regardless of what font or computer system is being used to access your webpage.

Symbols 32 through 126 include all the letters and numbers of the English alphabet, along with many common symbols such as the "at" symbol @ or the "dollar sign" symbol $. These can be accessed using a standard keyboard. Symbols 127 to 255, however, should be entered using the syntax described here:

1.) Select the symbol from the table below and get its corresponding code or number.

2.) place the cursor where you want the symbol to appear and type an ampersand (&)

3.) Type either a pound sign (#) and the (number) of the desired symbol or the (code name) of the symbol.

4.) Close the command with a semi-colon: (;)

For example: to get the symbol à type either à or à— Voilà! Done.

Note: a sample use. The < symbol and the > symbol can be very useful when trying to show HTML code without rendering it on your page. For example, here's the code for my Ancient Expressions signature emblem:

As you can see, it is the exact code without the need to leave out the brackets or add superfluous spaces that must be removed before use.
