The hall is a veritable forest of columns. I don't know about any of you, but I find it impossible to put into words the emotions their sheer size arouse in me. The nave was begun by Amenhotep III, who conceived of it as a simple colonnade leading to the sanctuary. Not quite as tall are the side aisles, begun by Horemheb. Work continued under Seti I and his son Ramses II and was finally completed by Ramses IV. The difference in height is what made it possible to include the openwork stone windows called claustra you see above you. This open fretwork was what magically illuminated the interior.
